After England rout, Rauf pushes for Pakistan Test comeback

New Delhi, Sep 17 (UNI) Pakistan’s Test campaign has taken a severe hit after their recent 0-3 whitewash in England, leaving them at the rock bottom of the ICC World Test Championship standings at ninth and searching for answers in their pace attack. Amid that setback, Haris Rauf is pushing for a return to the longest format ahead of the home series against Sri Lanka.
Pakistan’s next WTC assignment is a two-Test series against Sri Lanka in November, and Rauf believes he can add depth to a pace unit that struggled badly in England.
“There’s always a purpose that is driving you when you play cricket,” Rauf said.
“I am trying to put my name forward for the Sri Lanka series, and Pakistan is also in need (of a fast bowler). Let’s see what happens in the future,” he added.
Pakistan’s pace attack struggled during the England series, with Mohammad Abbas the only seamer to make a significant impact, taking 13 wickets at an average of 25.38. In contrast, Ollie Robinson led the series with 21 wickets at 8.76, followed by Josh Tongue with 19 at 16.31 and Jofra Archer with 12.
Pakistan’s WTC position was further damaged by an 11-point deduction for slow over-rate in the final Test at Edgbaston.
Rauf has played only one Test, against England in Rawalpindi in December 2022, where he suffered a quad injury after bowling 13 overs and taking one wicket. He has since established himself as a white-ball specialist, making more than 150 ODI and T20I appearances and taking 240 wickets.
With Pakistan looking to recover from their England setback, Rauf sees the coming months as an opportunity to prepare for a possible Test return.
“You look to improve yourself by playing the longer format whenever you get time.
“I had time to work on myself right now with the series against Sri Lanka and England coming up so I am looking to avail it. This is the best preparation,” he said.
