SAI facilitates Japan training camp for judokas ahead of Asian Games & Worlds

New Delhi, Sep 17 (UNI) The Sports Authority of India (SAI) has facilitated an overseas training camp for India’s senior judo team at Tsukuba University in Japan as the judokas step up preparations for the 2026 Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya and the World Judo Championships in Baku.
A 14-member Indian delegation, comprising 11 judokas and three coaches, is taking part in the International Training (Pre-Games) programme at Tsukuba University until October 2.
Three members of the delegation — Asmita Dey in the women’s 48kg category, Yamini Mourya in 57kg and Takhellambam Inunganbi in 70kg, are part of India’s Asian Games squad. Asmita is scheduled to compete on September 30, while Yamini and Inunganbi will take the mat on October 1 at the Aichi International Arena, also known as IG Arena, in Nagoya.
The Japan camp comes at a busy stage of the international calendar, with the Asian Games running from September 19 to October 4, followed immediately by the World Judo Championships in Baku from October 4 to 11. India will have 10 judokas, including one male and nine female, competing at the World Championships.
Harsh Singh, who will compete in the men’s 60kg category, is the lone male judoka in the Tsukuba group. The women’s contingent includes Commonwealth Games 2026 gold medallist Asmita Dey, Shraddha K Chopade (52kg), L Nungshithoi Chanu (52kg), Yamini Mourya (57kg), Linthoi Chanambam (63kg), Unnati Sharma (63kg), Himanshi Tokas (63kg), Takhelambam Inunganbi (70kg), KH Taibanganbi (70kg) and Ishroop Narang (78kg).
The coaching team consists of Jiwan Kumar Sharma, Birender Singh and Rajwinder Kaur.
The overseas stint has been sanctioned under the Sports Ministry’s Assistance to National Sports Federations (ANSF) scheme, with the Judo Federation of India coordinating the foreign exposure programme.
