Ahead of campus polls, Odisha student outfit appeals for democratic decorum

Bhubaneswar, Oct 11 (UNI) With student union elections scheduled across Odisha’s universities and colleges on October 15, the Universal Proutist Students Federation (UPSF) has raised concerns over the use of money power, political interference, divisive activities and violence, warning that such practices could undermine democratic values on campuses.
The organisation has urged political parties to stay out of campus electoral battles and refrain from using students for partisan interests, stressing that student polls should nurture independent thinking, ethical leadership and democratic awareness.
Addressing a press conference here today, UPSF said student union elections should serve as a platform for young people to learn democratic traditions and develop leadership skills, rather than turn them into political pawns.
It urged university and college authorities to ensure free, fair and peaceful elections in accordance with prescribed rules and regulations.
Invoking the principles of Progressive Utilization Theory (PROUT), the organisation said education should promote all-round human development, morality and social responsibility.
UPSF also appealed to students, political parties, educationists and concerned citizens to protect the dignity of educational institutions.
“Let campuses be centres of knowledge, not battlegrounds of political hostility,” it said, raising the slogan, “No political shoes in the temple of learning!”
UPSF State Advisor Kanhu Charan Behura and State Core Committee members Tapan Pradhan, Nilay Mahapatra, Tapasi Devi, Ankita Swain and Ashutosh Priyadarshan Rout addressed the press conference.UNI MK AAB
