Prohibitory order clamped in Pungro sub-division of Kiphire

Dimapur, Oct 11 (UNI) The Kiphire district magistrate has imposed prohibitory orders in Pungro sub-division, excluding Khongsa block but including Kiusam circle, amid simmering tensions between the Yimkhiung and Tikhir communities with immediate effect.
One person was reportedly killed, and houses were torched in the violence between the two communities on Saturday.
The order was issued under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, following concerns over a possible escalation of tensions in areas where the two communities coexist, including Zaonger, Pokphur and Longtsunger.
The order prohibits assemblies of five or more persons likely to disturb public peace, carrying weapons, organising potentially confrontational gatherings without the required permission, and spreading material that is likely to incite violence or hostility between communities. The order takes immediate effect.
Meanwhile, the district administration, in a public advisory, on Sunday urged residents to exercise restraint and warned against actions that could trigger further confrontation.
Kiphire DC Temsuwati Longkumer appealed to community organisations, village authorities and individuals to refrain from provocative statements, intimidation and the circulation of unverified information.
He appealed to all communities to uphold mutual respect and peaceful coexistence, stressing that cooperation was essential to prevent further violence.
Longkumer also asked residents to comply with prohibitory restrictions already in force and cooperate with the police and civil authorities.
The administration urged village councils, gaon burhas (village heads), tribal organisations and community leaders to discourage retaliatory action and help resolve differences through dialogue.
Stating that the administration is monitoring the situation in coordination with the police and other authorities, the DC said violations of the applicable orders, or acts prejudicial to public peace and security, would invite action under the law, the advisory stated.
