Air India to shift flight operations to Navi Mumbai Airport from December

Mumbai, Oct 26 (UNI) Air India Group and Adani Airports have announced a phased transition of flight operations from Mumbai to Navi Mumbai Airport.
Air India Group will commence the phased transition of some of its West Asia services from Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) to the Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA), with Air India Express operating four daily domestic flights from December 2026 and planned services to Kuwait as well as existing services to Oman from January 2027, according to an official statement.
The Air India Group will progressively transition Air India Express services to Jeddah, Riyadh, Dammam, Doha, Muscat and Sharjah, to the Adani-owned Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA), with the process expected to be completed by the IATA Northern Summer 2027 season, an official statement by Adani Airport Holdings Limited (AAHL) said.
The phased transition by the Tata-owned Air India Group is a result of continued collaborative engagement with the airport operator and is aligned with the wider airport transition program for both Indian and international airlines and will support the long-awaited redevelopment of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) airport’s T-1 terminal, which is expected to require capacity reductions as work progresses.
Simultaneously, the expansion of international operations at Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA) is intended to strengthen connectivity from Navi Mumbai as the new airport scales up its operations.
The Air India Group stated that operating from both airports would give travellers greater choice and convenience and support the growth of aviation infrastructure across the region.
The phased transition also supports the development of Mumbai’s dual-airport system while enabling Air India Group to continue serving the market efficiently and preserve the historicity of its existing operating slots at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA).
Operating from both Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) and Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA) will strengthen connectivity across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region, provide travelers with greater choice and convenience, and support the continued growth of aviation infrastructure in the region, according to the official statement.
Navi Mumbai International Airport is being developed with advanced technology, multimodal connectivity and scalable infrastructure to support the region's future aviation growth and deliver a seamless travel experience.
The planned shifts come as AAHL works to establish NMIA as a second aviation hub for the Mumbai region, easing pressure on the capacity-constrained Mumbai airport while accommodating the redevelopment of the T-1 terminal at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA), according to the statement.
