Air Marshal Ashutosh Dixit named 29th IAF Chief

New Delhi, Oct 6 (UNI) “We prevailed not because we had better missiles, but because we had a better nervous system.” That assessment of Operation Sindoor, made by Air Marshal Ashutosh Dixit, could well serve as a defining statement of the warfare philosophy of the officer who will now lead the Indian Air Force as its 29th Chief of the Air Staff.
The government on Tuesday appointed Dixit as the next Chief of the Air Staff, succeeding Air Chief Marshal Amar Preet Singh, who is set to superannuate on October 31. Dixit, currently serving as Vice Chief of the Air Staff, will assume charge as the 29th IAF chief with effect from the afternoon of October 31.
An Experimental Test Pilot and Qualified Flying Instructor, Dixit has more than 3,500 hours of flying experience and has operated a wide range of aircraft, including the Mirage-2000, MiG variants, Jaguar, An-32, IL-78, Hawk and Tejas.
Commissioned into the fighter stream of the IAF on December 6, 1986, Dixit has completed nearly four decades of service and has held a wide range of operational, command, staff, and instructional appointments.
Before taking over as Vice Chief of the Air Staff on July 1, Dixit served as the Chief of Integrated Defence Staff (CISC) at Headquarters Integrated Defence Staff from May 2025 to June 2026. Prior to that, he was the Air Officer Commanding-in-Chief of Central Air Command.
As CISC, Dixit was closely associated with the military's efforts towards jointness and integration among the three services. During his tenure, multiple joint doctrines and orders were issued, and initiatives were undertaken to strengthen integrated capabilities across domains.
Dixit's tenure as CISC coincided with Operation Sindoor, the Indian military operation launched in May 2025 following the Pahalgam terror attack.
As the senior tri-service officer heading HQ IDS during the operation, Dixit was closely associated with the jointness and integration framework underpinning the operation. The Ministry of Defence has subsequently highlighted his involvement in Operation Sindoor, while the HQ IDS described his tenure as being marked by a pivotal role in the operation.
Dixit himself, while speaking publicly after the operation, said the integration and coordination demonstrated during Operation Sindoor were the culmination of efforts undertaken since the Kargil conflict. “This operation, which was undertaken, was a culmination of such long (period) of efforts, and gives us satisfaction that whatever we have been doing, we have been doing correctly,” he said.
He said, “The selection of targets, intelligence planning, joint planning, coordination, everything happened quite nicely”, underlining the role of inter-service integration in the conduct of the operation.
Dixit also identified several lessons from the operation, including non-linearity, simultaneity of response and long-range vectors, while stressing the importance of joint training and integration in an environment marked by the “fog of war”.
He commanded No. 9 Squadron, re-equipping it with Mirage-2000 aircraft, and subsequently commanded a frontline fighter air base in the Western Sector and a premier fighter training base in the Southern Sector.
As a test pilot, he served at the Aircraft and Systems Testing Establishment (ASTE), Bengaluru, including as Commanding Officer of the Flight Test Squadron. During this period, he was associated with indigenous upgrade and development programmes, including avionics upgrades for Jaguar and MiG-27 aircraft.
He also served as Director of Air Staff Requirements and was involved in the planning and conduct of trials for the Medium Multi-Role Combat Aircraft (MMRCA) programme. His subsequent appointments included Air Defence Commander, Southern Air Command; Assistant Chief of the Air Staff (Projects); Assistant Chief of the Air Staff (Plans); Senior Air Staff Officer at South Western Air Command; and Deputy Chief of the Air Staff at Air Headquarters.
His flying experience spans more than 20 aircraft types, including fighter, transport, trainer, and aerial refuelling platforms.
Dixit is an alumnus of the National Defence Academy, Defence Services Staff College in Bangladesh, and the National Defence College, New Delhi.
He has been awarded the Vayu Sena Medal (2006), Vishisht Seva Medal (2011), Ati Vishisht Seva Medal (2023) and Param Vishisht Seva Medal (2026) for distinguished service.
