Alexandra Eala leans on character to juggle expectations & reality

Tokyo, Oct 25 (UNI) The month following the US Open has not exactly been rosy for Alexandra Eala.

The Filipino tennis star dropped her first match at the Singapore Open, then frustratingly missed out on winning an Olympic quota at the Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan. That was followed by another first-round exit at the Wuhan Open, according to olympics.com.
Through all the disappointment, the 21-year-old has carried herself well. Whether she takes another leap in 2027 or not, it is a quality Eala is determined to hold up.
“It's definitely a trait that I value,” Eala said on Sunday, ahead of the Pan Pacific Open where she will make her Tokyo debut.
“Learning how to be gracious in defeat I think is something that was really pushed by my parents and by my family, and something that now that I've grown up and I have my own opinions, I really, really value and try to be as strong in that as I possibly can.
“And in the end, I think it makes you come out the other end stronger - it makes you both as a person and as a player. Tough losses come, they always do, but I think how you handle yourself in those moments can really set the tone for how you can improve afterwards.”
Eala, who will face British wild card Mika Stojsavljevic in the first round, is back in Japan after settling for bronze at the Asian Games. Victory there would have earned her a spot at the LA28 Olympic Games but it wasn’t meant to be.
After Tokyo, Eala is slated to compete in Hong Kong which will be her final WTA event of the year before committing to some exhibitions in her home country in December.
Demands should be even higher for Eala next season after breaking out in 2026 with her first WTA title in Washington, DC.
But already, she has figured out how to differentiate between what she or her fans want and reality,
a line that can often become blurred amid the insane hype like that which has surrounded Eala this year.
“I think I'm an ambitious person. So when you talk about ambitions, there are so many personally and I think there are ambitions and then there are goals. And goals can shift and adjust over time depending on the experiences that I go through.
“And the reality is that my supporters - albeit that they're super passionate and follow me a lot - they don't see a huge chunk of what I experience.
"So I think when it comes to what drives the goals or where they come from that's where it differs,
is that there's so many things that happen or that I experience that can influence my goals.
“That being said, I mean I sky’s the limit for the things that I dream of.”
