NSU to host All India Inter-University Thang-Ta Championship in Manipur

Imphal, Oct 25 (UNI) The National Sports University (NSU), Manipur, will host the All India Inter-University Thang-Ta (Men's and Women's) Championship from October 26 to 28 at the Indoor Stadium, Khuman Lampak Sports Complex, Imphal.
Addressing a press briefing at Khuman Lampak Sports Complex on Sunday, NSU Vice-Chancellor Daljit Singh Chaudhary said the championship was being organised in accordance with the annual sports calendar of the Association of Indian Universities (AIU) for 2026–27.
The three-day competition is expected to bring together around 350 participants representing 31 universities affiliated with the AIU, providing a national platform for university athletes to showcase their skills in Thang-Ta, the traditional martial art of Manipur.
Manipur Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh has consented to attend the opening ceremony as the Chief Guest. The inaugural programme is scheduled for October 26 at 4 pm at the Indoor Stadium, Khuman Lampak Sports Complex.
Highlighting the cultural significance of Thang-Ta, the Vice-Chancellor said the martial art was more than a sporting discipline, describing it as a living tradition and an integral part of Manipur's cultural heritage.
The traditional weapons used in the martial art — Thang (sword) and Ta (spear) — symbolise discipline, courage and traditions preserved and passed down through generations.
He further noted that Thang-Ta's growing recognition at the national level had created opportunities for university athletes from across India to experience and appreciate Manipur's rich cultural legacy.
The championship is expected to promote the traditional martial art among young athletes while strengthening its presence in the national university sports circuit. UNI NS NST CDS
