Allahabad HC suspends 10-yr sentence, grants bail to Azam Khan and son in the double PAN card case

Prayagraj, Oct 29 (UNI) The Allahabad High Court on Thursday suspended the 10-year sentence awarded to Samajwadi Party leader Mohammad Azam Khan and the seven year term to his son Abdullah Azam in the double PAN card case and granted them bail, but refused to stay their convictions.
Justice Samit Gopal, presiding over a single-judge bench, delivered the verdict.
The Rampur MP/MLA court had convicted the father-son duo in the case involving Abdullah’s possession of two PAN cards. On November 17, 2025, the trial court sentenced both to seven years in prison.
On the state government subsequently filing an appeal on May 5, 2026, seeking enhancement of the sentences, the Rampur court increased Azam Khan’s sentence by three years to 10 years on May 23, 2026, while Abdullah’s sentence remained unchanged.
Azam Khan challenged the trial court’s decision before the High Court, seeking a stay on his conviction, suspension of his sentence and interim bail. After hearing arguments on October 15, Justice Gopal reserved the verdict.
The High Court’s order clears the way for Abdullah’s release from jail. However, Azam Khan’s release remains uncertain as two other cases are pending against him.
One of the cases was recently registered by the Enforcement Directorate (ED), while another was filed by the Uttar Pradesh Vigilance Department on September 10. His release could depend on whether the authorities obtain warrants in connection with these cases.
On Wednesday, the ED seized the land and buildings belonging to Jauhar Ali University, valued at more than Rs 1,100 crore, in connection with alleged financial irregularities.
