BJP wins 6, SP 5 in UP Member of Legislative Council polls

Lucknow, Oct 29 (UNI) The ruling BJP won six seats, while the Samajwadi Party (SP) secured five in the biennial elections to 11 seats of the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Council, with the principal Opposition party gaining ground at the expense of the BJP.
The BJP won four Teachers’ and two Graduate seats, while the SP secured two Teachers’ and three Graduate seats, gaining two seats compared with its previous tally.
Of the 11 seats, the BJP had previously held six, the SP - three, the Teachers’ Party - one, and an Independent candidate - one. Neither the Teachers’ Party nor an independent candidate won a seat this time.
The BJP suffered a setback in Varanasi, where it lost both the Teachers’ and Graduates' constituencies. Counting for the graduate seat continued for more than 50 hours, amid commotion at the counting centre that began late on Wednesday and continued through the night.
BJP candidate Kedarnath Singh staged a sit-in protest, accusing Kashi observer Pranjal Yadav of electoral malpractice and demanding his removal. More than 500 SP workers subsequently reached the counting centre, according to reports.
SP president Akhilesh Yadav remained in touch with party leaders over the phone through the night, seeking updates on each round of counting.
On Thursday morning, Kedarnath Singh conceded defeat. SP candidate Ashutosh Sinha secured 50,529 votes, while Singh received 33,530.
Polling for the state’s five Graduates' and six Teachers’ MLC seats was held on October 23, with 152 candidates in the fray. Counting began at 8 am on October 27. There were approximately 14.81 lakh voters in both elections, of which 8.18 lakh exercised their franchise.
