Amazon pulls plug on 'Étoile' after one season

Los Angeles, June 7 (UNI) Amazon's Prime Video has opted to cancel 'Étoile' after just one season, notwithstanding its original two-season straight-to-series order.
'Étoile', an ambitious foray into the high-stakes world of classical ballet, chronicled the intertwined journeys of two venerable but beleaguered ballet companies based in New York and Paris.
The series starred Luke Kirby and Charlotte Gainsbourg as the impassioned artistic directors who, in a bold bid to reinvigorate their companies, orchestrate intercontinental exchange of their principal dancers, reports Deadline.
Although Amazon had promised two seasons in 2023, the deal included clauses allowing the company to back out after the first.
'Étoile' didn't manage to break into Nielsen's top streaming charts during its debut weeks, raising concerns about its viewership potential and long-term viability, especially given its reportedly high production costs.
It is not believed to be tied to the regime change at Amazon MGM Studios as the series was ordered under former head Jennifer Salke who exited in March.
The cast of Étoile includes Maisel alums Kirby and Gideon Glick, Charlotte Gainsbourg, de Laâge in her first English-speaking role, David Alvarez, Ivan du Pontavice, Taïs Vinolo, David Haig, LaMay Zhang, and Simon Callow.
Gilmore Girls‘ Yanic Truesdale was a recurring guest, with Gilmore Girls and Bunheads’ Kelly Bishop also making appearances.
From Amazon MGM Studios, 'Étoile' was executive produced by Amy Sherman-Palladino, Daniel Palladino, and Dhana Rivera Gilbert. Scott Ellis served as co-executive producer.
