Ambala Civil Hospital expansion gets Defence Minister’s nod on Military land

Ambala, Oct 5 (UNI) Expansion of the Ambala Cantonment Civil Hospital in Haryana has received a fresh boost with Haryana Energy, Transport and Labour Minister Anil Vij securing a positive assurance from Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on providing adjoining military land for the project.
Vij said the hospital urgently needs additional space as the population of Ambala Cantonment has increased manifold. When the cantonment was established, its population was around 30,000–40,000, while it now caters to nearly three to four lakh people. The existing hospital premises, he said, are therefore no longer adequate to meet the healthcare requirements of the area.
The state government has also sanctioned several important healthcare projects for Ambala Cantonment, including a Rs 10-crore dharamshala for attendants of cancer patients and a Spine Injury Centre, which Vij said would be the first such facility in Haryana. However, the projects require additional land, and there is no suitable alternative government land available, he said.
Vij said Ambala Sadar was carved out of the Cantonment Board area and constituted separately on February 5, 1977. The remaining surrounding land is under the Cantonment Board and the Army. As a result, adjoining military land is crucial for expanding the Civil Hospital and implementing the proposed healthcare projects.
He said he met the Defence Minister on Sunday and specifically raised the requirement for military land. Rajnath Singh, Vij said, gave a positive assurance and directed that the matter be taken up through the proper channel with all necessary documents and in accordance with the prescribed conditions.
Vij said acquisition of defence land involves several formalities and can be a lengthy process, but expressed confidence that the Defence Minister's intervention would help advance the proposal. He stressed that the expansion of the Ambala Cantonment Civil Hospital is essential in view of the area's rapidly growing population.
Reacting to the Opposition's demand for the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, Vij accused Opposition parties of unnecessarily creating controversy over electoral rolls.
He said the Opposition was questioning the electoral rolls after facing political setbacks, despite its leaders having themselves won elections on the basis of the same rolls.
“If the same electoral rolls were used for our victories, they say the rolls are wrong; but when Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi won elections on the basis of the same electoral rolls, they were considered correct,” Vij said.
He further said that if Opposition leaders genuinely believed the electoral rolls were incorrect, they should resign from the positions they had won using those very rolls. Vij accused the Opposition of raising objections to the electoral process selectively after losing elections.
