UP: Over 225 frames turn Lucknow’s Lal Baradari into National Photography Canvas

Lucknow, Oct 5 (UNI) Lucknow’s historic Lal Baradari became a national canvas for photography today as 228 works by selected and award winning photographers from across India went on display at the 19th All India Photography Art Exhibition 2026 to 27.
Organised by the Uttar Pradesh State Lalit Kala Akademi under the Culture Department, the exhibition brings together different creative perspectives and experiments in photography, giving visitors an opportunity to explore how artists from across the country interpret people, places and moments through the camera.
The exhibition and award ceremony were inaugurated at the Akademi premises in Kaisarbagh by Dr Ratishankar Tripathi, Chairman of Bhartendu Natya Akademi; Subir Rai, senior photographer and retired photographer of The Hindu; senior artist Rajendra Prasad; Dr Sunil Kumar Vishwakarma, Chairman of the State Lalit Kala Akademi; and Vice Chairman Girish Chandra Mishra.
The Akademi received entries from 167 photographers this year. An expert selection committee comprising Anil Risal Singh from Lucknow, Dr Radhakrishna Ganesan from Varanasi and Dr Kumar Jigyasu from New Delhi evaluated the submissions.
The committee selected portfolios of 32 photographers, with each portfolio comprising six photographs. Five additional portfolios were chosen for awards, taking the total number of selected photographers to 37.
On the occasion five photographers were honoured. Among them were Happy Mukherjee from Hooghly in West Bengal, Ajayesh Jaiswal from Lucknow and Krishna Singh from Varanasi received the Outstanding Portfolio Award, carrying Rs ₹20,000 each.
Abhishek Basak from Kolkata and Praveen Rawat from Indore received the Special Portfolio Award of Rs ₹10,000 each. All five photographers were also presented certificates and mementoes.
The awardees reflected on the exhibition’s national reach, while the selection of photographers from Lucknow and Varanasi places Uttar Pradesh’s contemporary photography talent alongside artists from other parts of the country.
Akademi Director Amit Kumar Agnihotri said the exhibition features 228 photographs drawn from the portfolios of awardees, selected participants and members of the selection committee. Together, the works offer visitors a view of the diverse visual approaches emerging in Indian photography.
The exhibition will remain open to the public until October 10. Visitors, photography enthusiasts and art students can view the works at Lal Baradari Bhawan in Kaisarbagh from 10 am to 5 pm.
The State Lalit Kala Akademi has organised the All India Photography Art Exhibition since 2001 to promote photography as an independent form of visual art and encourage photographers to experiment with new techniques and perspectives.
Eighteen editions have been held before the current exhibition. According to the Akademi, it is the only state level art academy in the country to organise such a competitive national photography exhibition regularly.
The format has allowed emerging photographers to display their work alongside artists who have established national and international profiles. By bringing their portfolios together in Lucknow, the exhibition positions Uttar Pradesh not only as the host, but also as an active centre for dialogue, experimentation and recognition in contemporary photography.
