Anthrax – ‘Cursum Perficio’ review: A predictable but powerful thrash metal rollercoaster!

New Delhi, Sep 19 (UNI) Finally back after 10 years, the legendary American thrashers Anthrax have returned with their 12th studio album ‘Cursum Perficio’ (Latin for “I finish the journey”). Their last album ‘For All Kings’ came out in 2016, when the world was a rather different place altogether.
In the last decade, much has changed: their legendary peers Slayer and Megadeth have closed shop, and Metallica’s new album was a rather polarising one.
So what about Anthrax? Well, the decade worth of changes seems to have had an effect on them, but on a more positive note, for the sound carries a darker sense of urgency, almost as if the band has gone through an epiphany of how many years have passed since they first exploded onto the metal scene since the '80s, and how much has changed since then.
They have gotten older, and the music scene is no longer what it was. But simultaneously, the band has sort of shown time that it won’t bend to it as they are still full of energy, bringing forth a thrashing chunk of heaviness to the fore.
Tracks like ‘The Long Goodbye’ bring forth a sense of haunting, while ‘It’s For The Kids’ has more of the Misfits style of punk. ‘Everybody’s Got A Plan’ is one of the thrashiest songs here as it just emanates the genre’s very essence while ‘NYC 93’ features more of the old playful style of punk which Anthrax are well known for.
‘Watch It Go’ has a strong sense of urgency to it which is great for a climax, as the finale ‘My Victory’ ends on a thrashingly epic note.
A solid 53 minutes: throughout the record the band’s signature dose of crushing heavy, groove laden riffs, shreddy solos, mixed with old school thrash metal tendencies sees no relenting. There are no stops on this metal rollercoaster.
While there are bits of the Anthrax’s old-school days to be heard, with riffs straight out of classics like ‘Among The Living’, ‘Spreading The Disease’, or ‘Persistence of Time’, ‘Cursum Perficio’ is its own beast and should be seen as that.
The album isn’t exactly brimming with some ultra impressive technical feats, or some great deal of variety. In fact, the album does tend to get kind of repetitive, and certain tracks like the title track feel too long, while ‘Infectious’ sort of feels misplaced.
But even then, this is far from boring. This is simple in its composition, beefy in its production and sound, and in the end, it’s exactly what it really needs to be -- which is just one solid, unrelenting metal behemoth.
Anthrax may not be getting any younger, but sure are not ageing either, as the band is showing the world that they still have plenty to bring, and unleash. Score: 7.5/10
