Anushka brace helps India beat Syria 2-0 in AFC U17 qualifiers

New Delhi, Oct 8 (UNI) Anushka Kumari scored twice as India’s U17 women’s team continued their AFC U17 Women’s Asian Cup China 2027 qualifiers campaign with a 2-0 win over Syria in their second Group E match at the MP Selayang Stadium on Thursday.
Anushka, who struck five times in India’s 14-0 win over Iraq in their opening game, scored once in each half to take her qualifiers tally to seven goals in two matches.
The victory gave India six points from two games and left them on the brink of qualification for AFC U17 Women’s Asian Cup China 2027. The Young Tigresses will face hosts Malaysia in their final Group E match on October 11, with only the group winners advancing to the Asian Cup.
Coach Joakim Alexandersson retained the same starting XI that had overwhelmed Iraq and India again dominated possession and territory from the outset. They took the lead in the sixth minute when Anushka collected the ball after Syria failed to clear a free-kick from Redima Devi Chingkhamayum. The striker shifted to her left before producing a superb left-footed lob into the far top corner.
India continued to control the game, with Redima, Thandamoni Baskey and Alva Devi Senjam creating problems for the Syrian defence. Anushka came close to doubling the lead before the break, but her chip was cleared off the line.
Nine minutes into the second half, Anushka found the net again. After Syria failed to clear following a challenge on Alva inside the box, the ball fell to Anushka, who drilled a right-footed effort into the near post.
Play was briefly halted in the 58th minute due to a thunderstorm, but India remained in control after the restart. They missed chances to extend their lead but secured a second successive win and clean sheet. Syria had few opportunities to threaten goalkeeper Munni but India’s defence kept things tight to ensure the win.
