AP: Election Commission must restore public confidence in electoral system: Raghuveera Reddy

Vijayawada, Oct 1 (UNI) Congress Working Committee (CWC) Member Dr N Raghuveera Reddy Thursday said that widespread concern is being expressed across the country over the manner in which the Election Commission is functioning and over the developments taking place in the name of revision of electoral rolls.

Speaking to the media at Andhra Ratna Bhavan here, Dr Raghuveera Reddy said that several questions had been raised by Opposition Leader Rahul Gandhi over the past few years regarding the electoral process and electoral rolls have gained further significance in the light of various recent reports.

Mr Reddy referred to a recent investigative report published by The Indian Express, which, he said, brought to light concerns regarding the functioning of the Election Commission and the process of revision of electoral rolls.

Dr. Raghuveera Reddy stated that various reports have indicated that more than 13 crore names have been excluded from the draft electoral rolls during the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process across the country.

However, as the Election Commission has clarified that these should not be treated as final deletions and that the names are being examined as part of the ongoing process, he stressed the need for complete transparency and disclosure of details relating to every such deletion.

Dr. Raghuveera Reddy demanded that complete data relating to the deletion, inclusion and correction of names in electoral rolls be made available to the public, both State-wise and Assembly Constituency-wise. He also urged that the details of voters reportedly excluded during the SIR process in Andhra Pradesh be made public and that necessary steps be taken to restore the names of all eligible voters.

Congress party senior leaders, including APCC Vice-president Kolanukonda Shivaji, Naraharisetty Narasimha Rao V Gurunadham and Korivi Vinay Kumar, were present.
