AP: TDP, YSRCP activists clash in Annamayya; vehicles torched, several injured

Rayachoti, Oct 16 (UNI) Violence broke out in Rayachoti and Punganur in Andhra Pradesh’s Annamayya district on Friday, the first day of filing nominations for the Urban Local Body (ULB) elections, with vehicles set ablaze and damaged and several activists injured in clashes between the ruling Telugu Desam Party (TDP) and opposition YSR Congress Party (YSRCP).
According to police, activists of the two parties clashed, hurling stones and attacking each other with sticks. Several activists and some police personnel sustained injuries in the clashes.
Cars were set on fire in SN Colony in Rayachoti, while eight cars were damaged in Punganur. The violence erupted as candidates from both parties arrived at nomination centres to file their papers, accompanied by party leaders and supporters.
TDP leaders said four of their leaders, including Madhu Royal, were injured in the clashes and admitted to hospital. Police said tensions escalated when leaders and supporters of both parties reached the nomination centres at the same time.
TDP leaders alleged that an SUV carrying YSRCP MP PV Mithun Reddy drove at high speed towards a nomination centre and ploughed through a group of activists, injuring one person. They also accused the MP of intimidating people who had arrived to file nominations.
The TDP leaders further alleged that the MP entered the nomination centre in violation of election rules, prompting protests by TDP activists and triggering the clash.
Police resorted to a lathi charge to disperse the warring groups. Section 144 was imposed around the nomination centres, and additional police forces were being deployed to Rayachoti and Punganur to prevent further violence.
TDP leaders said four of their leaders, including Madhu Royal, were injured in the clashes and admitted to hospital. Police said tensions escalated when leaders and supporters of both parties reached the nomination centres at the same time.
