Arunachal MLA, 3 others sentenced to 2 yrs SI in cheque bounce case

Itanagar, June 13 (UNI) Arunachal Pradesh MLA Ratu Techi and three others have been sentenced to two years of simple imprisonment (SI) by a court in Punjab in a cheque bounce case.
The Judicial Magistrate First Class (JMFC), SAS Nagar, Mohali, Punjab, gave the sentence under Section 138 of the Negotiable Instruments Act.
The complaint was lodged by Kulwinder Singh Grewal against M/s TK Engineering & Ors, leading to the conviction of the Sagalee MLA Ratu Techi, Tara Techi, Julli Techi, and PK Roy. As per the court's verdict, the convicts have also been directed to pay a compensation amount of Rs 2.5 crore to the complainant.
Following the sentencing, the convicts submitted an application seeking suspension of the sentence to allow time for filing an appeal.
The court allowed the prayer, giving the convicts interim bail on personal bonds of Rs 50,000 each, with one surety of the same amount to be furnished by July 10.
JMFC Abhay Rajan Shukla noted: “Since the convicts intend to file an appeal against the order of conviction and sentence… they are admitted to bail… The order of conviction and sentence is deemed to be suspended until July 10, 2025.”
Until then, the court has accepted personal bonds in view of the convicts' inability to arrange sureties on the day of the hearing. The matter will be revisited on July 10, when the required bail and surety bonds must be furnished.
This case marks a rare instance of a sitting legislator from Arunachal Pradesh being sentenced in a financial offence under the Negotiable Instruments Act. UNI TD SSP
