Arunachal observes 'Samvidhan Hatya Diwas'; leaders call for vigilance to uphold democratic values

Itanagar, June 25 (UNI) Arunachal Pradesh today joined the rest of the nation in solemnly observing ‘Samvidhan Hatya Diwas’, commemorating the dark chapter of June 25, 1975, when the Emergency was imposed in India, suspending civil liberties and stifling democratic institutions.
State Governor (Retd) Lt General KT Parnaik, along with Deputy Chief Minister Chowna Mein, led the observance at the DK Convention Centre in Itanagar. Addressing the gathering, the governor said the day serves as a reminder of the emergency and the importance of preventing any misuse of power in a democratic setup.
He stated that the day is also a tribute to those who stood against authoritarianism during the Emergency period (a 21-month period from June 25, 1975, to March 21, 1977).
The governor emphasised that Samvidhan Hatya Divas is an opportunity for citizens to reflect on the role of the Constitution in upholding democratic values and protecting fundamental rights.
Chief Minister Pema Khandu, while joining the commemorative programme held at Tawang Deputy Commissioner’s office premises, reflected on the gravity of the Emergency, calling it “a betrayal of India’s democratic soul”.
In his address, Khandu said, “It is a solemn occasion to remind ourselves that our Constitution is the soul of our democracy. When it is undermined, justice and freedom are the first to fall.” He urged citizens, especially the younger generation, to remain vigilant and uphold constitutional values in both letter and spirit.
Echoing similar sentiments, Deputy Chief Minister Chowna Mein at the Itanagar event stated, “June 25, 1975 (Emergency) was not just a political decision but a direct assault on our constitutional values. As we remember this dark chapter today, let us pledge to protect democracy, and upholding the dignity of the Constitution is our highest responsibility.”
On the occasion, the governor also inaugurated a photo exhibition, aimed at raising public awareness about the sanctity of the Constitution and the need to preserve democratic institutions.
Earlier in the morning, Women & Child Development and Cultural Affairs Minister Dasanglu Pul flagged off a walk-in rally at the IG Park here, organised by the Department of Art & Culture, Govt of Arunachal Pradesh, to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the emergency declaration.
The rally saw enthusiastic participation from police personnel, officers, and members of the public. “It was heartening to see citizens come together to reaffirm our commitment to democracy,” Pul remarked.
The observance of Samvidhan Hatya Divas across districts served as a reminder of the fragility of freedom and the collective responsibility to safeguard the Republic from authoritarian threats.
