Asian Masters Swimming: Ekbote strikes gold in 50m Butterfly

Bengaluru, Oct 6 (UNI) India’s Jay Prakash Ekbote clinched gold in the men’s 50m Butterfly in the 25–29 age category as the 2nd Asian Masters Swimming Championship 2026 continued with competitive racing across age groups here on Tuesday.
Ekbote clocked 25.90 seconds to finish ahead of compatriot Shubham Upadhyay, who took silver in 26.00 seconds. Iran’s Ali Malehmir Chegini claimed bronze with a timing of 26.72 seconds.
India also dominated the men’s 200m Breaststroke in the 25–29 category, with S Feroz Mohamed winning gold in 2:40.54. Oum Jaykumar Saxena secured silver in 2:45.00, while Yash Vikas Bagwe took bronze in 2:51.43.
In the 65–69 category, Mahadeo Taware topped the 200m Breaststroke in 3:40.36, completing an all-India podium alongside Chandrasekaran T (4:33.44) and Surendra Naik (4:48.01).
Sri Lanka’s Dilrukshi Avanthi Devmini Pere won the women’s 25–29 50m Butterfly in 30.58 seconds, with India’s Thanuja S taking silver in 33.58 seconds and Dolphi Sarang bronze in 33.81 seconds.
India’s Jalaja Shirole added another gold in the women’s 35–39 50m Butterfly, clocking 32.40 seconds. Sri Lanka’s Hansani Yasodara Weeratunge finished second in 38.59 seconds, while India’s Bhuvaneswari S took bronze in 39.45 seconds.
In the women’s 60–64 category, India’s Loveleen Johal won gold in 59.87 seconds, followed by compatriots Charu Rohatgi (1:02.35) and Alphonsa Joseph (1:02.48).
The championship, which has brought together Masters swimmers from across Asia and multiple age groups, will continue in Bengaluru until October 11.
The event is showcasing the competitive spirit, experience and enduring passion for swimming among veteran athletes from across the region.
