Assam CM hints at more pushbacks to Bangladesh

Guwahati, June 7 (UNI) Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Saturday said the government is going to push back more illegal foreigners in the days to come.
The Chief Minister said the Supreme court during a hearing of the Citizenship Amendment Act directed that the Immigrant (expulsion) Act is still in force under which a district commissioner can issue an expulsion order against illegal foreigners.
"This was a Supreme court order. However, we came to know about it recently. The DCs can issue an expulsion order and we can go for pushing back those detected foreigners," Sarma said while talking to media at Nalbari on Saturday.
Sarma said the process of detection of illegal foreigners would gather fresh momentum now. "The whole process was stalled due to the NRC updation process. Now we are going to speed up the process to detect and push back illegal foreigners," he said.
The CM's statement assumes significance following viral videos of pushed back illegal foreigners from Assam, drawing public ire.
The CM has said that there are certain provisions. "We are not pushing back those who have their cases pending or awaiting verdict. But those who are identified as foreigners, we do not need to go to the foreigners tribunal again. We are going to push them back through the DCs," he added.
The Assam Police had recently intensified its operation against illegal Bangladeshi immigrants in Assam. Hundreds of illegal Bangladeshi infiltrators are now picked up by the police from different parts of the state for verification.
A recent directive from the Ministry of Home Affairs asked states and UTS to book un-documented illegal immigrants from Bangladesh and Myanmar.
The MHA has also issued directions to the DGs of BSF and Assam Rifles, the two forces that guard the indo-Bangladesh and Myanmar borders, on stopping illegal migrants.
