Assam police nabs 133 in a single day for selling beef

Guwahati, July 1(UNI) Assam police today carried out a series of raids against beef in different districts of Assam and arrested 133 persons for their involvement in selling beef.
The police have also seized a huge quantity of meat suspected to be beef, police said.
A senior official of the Assam police said that a total of 133 people have also been arrested for
selling beef in different towns across the state.
He said that the raids were carried out include Guwahati, Kokrajhar, Nagaon, Charaideo, South Kamrup, Cachar and Dibrugarh.
"A huge quantity of both cooked and raw meat suspected to be beef were seized during the raid. In Kokrajhar alone, four hotels were searched by police teams," the police official said.
"The raids were carried out today as there have been reports of illegal selling of beef in violation of the provisions of Assam Cattle Preservation Act 2021. We raided hotels and restaurants, and registered dozens of cases at many police stations across the state," he said adding that while about 112 hotels were raided they have also seized over one tonne of suspected beef meat during the raid.
The Assam government has recently stated that the government will soon issue a Standard Operating Procedure (SoP) to implement the provision of the Assam Cattle Preservation Act of 2021 that restricts slaughter of cow and eating of beef within 5 kms radius of temples, namghars ands other religious sites.
It may be mentioned here that the Assam Cattle Preservation Act of 2021 bans cattle slaughter and sale of beef in areas where Hindus, Jains and Sikhs are in majority and within a five-km radius of a temple or satra (Vaishnavite monastery).
The Assam Cattle Preservation Act of 2021 also regulated the transportation, and slaughter of all cattle, and sale of beef and beef products in the state.
However, in December last year, the Assam cabinet decided to amend the 2021 act and put a restriction on public consumption of beef also. Accordingly, sale and consumption of beef became prohibited in public places such as restaurants and hotels were prohibited in Assam.
