Assam: Rain situation worsens, govt shuts down schools and colleges Saturday

Guwahati, May 30 (UNI) With Assam, Meghalaya and Arunachal Pradesh experiencing heavy rainfall for the last 48 hours, the Assam Government on Friday announced a special casual leave for its employees and decided to shut all schools and colleges on Saturday in Kamrup and Kamrup Metro districts.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said all state Govt employees will get an SCL, while schools & colleges would remain shut.
He said the private establishments have also been advised to take measures accordingly.
Meanwhile an advisory from the Assam State Disaster Management Authority said exceptionally heavy rainfall has severely affected the districts in the western and southern part of the State. These districts were lashed by extremely heavy rainfall measuring measuring over 20-30 cms following a deep depression over Northwest Bay of Bengal.
"An advisory from Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), Govt. of India today informed that, the deep depression over Northwest Bay of Bengal off West Bengal-Bangladesh coasts moved nearly northwards with a speed of 22 kmph yesterday and crossed West Bengal, Bangladesh coasts and lay centred at 1130 AM over West Bengal-Bangladesh coasts maintaining its intensity of deep depression till evening of May 31, 2025 in the northeastern states," it said, adding that the MHA, in this regard, published warning of exceptionally heavy rainfall over Meghalaya and extremely heavy rainfall along with wind speed reaching 50-60 kmph gusting to 70 kmph over Assam and nearby states in next 24 hours. The rains and high winds may aggravate water logging, slow vehicular movement, and increase the risk of localized landslides in vulnerable pockets.
The MHA advisory has asked the state and district authorities to closely monitor the situation and emergency response systems are being kept on alert.
In view of the current situation, the the CM appealed to everyone to stay indoors, avoid open areas and trees, and disconnect electrical devices during lightning.
People were also asked to avoid unnecessary movement during periods of intense rainfall and the residents in low-lying and hillside areas were advised to stay alert for any signs of flooding or landslides.
The public has also been urged to stay tuned to official weather updates and follow advisories issued by local authorities to ensure safety during this prolonged spell of rain. UNI AS SSP
