Assam to set up university named after independence movement martyr Kanaklata Barua

Guwahati, June 4 (UNI) Assam will soon have a university named after martyr Kanaklata Barua at an estimated cost of Rs.400 crore which will focus on emerging subjects like AI, Quantum computing and robotics etc.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said this on Wednesday after a cabinet meeting and added that the university will be established at Bholaguri tea estate at Gahpur in Assam's Biswanath district.
He said the government has already entrusted a team of academicians from IIT Guwahati, JNU and others to prepare the curriculum for the Swagid Kanaklata Baruah university, which will be based on Industry 5.0 standard.
The Bholaguri tea estate in Assam is historic in the sense that Assam's cultural doyen, Rup Konwar Jyotiprasad Agarwala shot his and Assam’s maiden Assamese feature film, 'Joymoti', in 1935 in Bholaguri tea estate.
Kanaklata Baruah on the other hand is a freedom fighter from Assam who took part in India's freedom movement. She was deeply influenced by the freedom movement and took part in it and laid down her life at the age of 17 to hoist the tricolour in 1942.
He said that workers of the Bholaguri tea estate whose land will be taken by the government for setting up the university will be adequately compensated.
"We are going to offer them VRS packages and they will be given land to settle in the university campus. The youth of those families will be given job reservation in the university in grade II and grade III category jobs," the Chief Minister added.
