Dhaka, June 9 (UNI) The National Citizen Party (NCP) – the official political unit of Bangladesh’s Students Against Discrimination (SAD) which led toppled the Sheikh Hasina government in August last year– is hoping to complete its full registration as an official political party by June 15, a top leader said on Monday.
"We hope to complete the registration application process by the 15th of this month, which is required for participating in elections," NCP's chief organiser Sarjis Alam said while speaking to reporters here.
The ‘students'’ party, has already formed committees in 100 upazilas across around 22 districts and is working to establish offices as part of the registration requirements.
"We are following official procedures and intend to complete registration within the time set for all political parties," he said.
Prioritising to build itself from a grassroot level, the NCP leader said “Once the structure is in place from the capital to the village level, we will be better prepared for electoral activities."
Along with the Jamaat, the NCP supported the Chief Advisor Mohammed Yunus led interim government’s announcement of elections in April 2026, much to the opposition of the nation’s primary political group – the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) – which called the decision a "sham".
While the party has repeatedly claimed to be a centrist non-religious party, its full support and cooperation with hardline Islamic groups like the Jamaat e Islami, and the Hefazat-e-Islam, and its opposition to the secular and pluralist tenets of Mujibism (the core principles of Bangladesh’s constitution and political identity) have called into question the party’s true ideological affiliations.
