Banks open on Sunday ahead of 3-day strike; 5-day banking remains key demand

New Delhi, Sep 27 (UNI) Several bank branches are operating on Sunday, September 27, giving customers an additional opportunity to complete essential banking work before a three-day strike scheduled from September 28 to September 30.
The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) had directed banks to keep public sector bank (PSB) branches, Regional Rural Banks (RRBs), offices, ATM-linked branches and currency chests operational on September 27. The move is aimed at ensuring that customers can complete transactions and other services that require a physical visit to a bank branch before the proposed strike begins.
The Sunday opening is particularly significant because banks are scheduled to remain affected by the three-day strike from Monday, September 28, through Wednesday, September 30. With the preceding Saturday being an off day, the strike could otherwise have resulted in a prolonged period during which customers would have limited access to branch-based banking services.
Public sector banks and Regional Rural Banks are operating today in line with the RBI's instructions. Customers who need to visit a branch for services such as cash-related work, documentation or other in-person banking requirements can use the additional working day.
Private banks, however, are not participating in the proposed strike and their branch schedules may differ. Customers of private-sector lenders should therefore check with their respective bank or local branch regarding today's operating status.
The RBI's arrangement is primarily intended to minimise disruption to customers during the strike period and provide an extra working day for banking activities that cannot be completed digitally.
Bank employee organisations have called for a stay-out strike from September 28 to September 30. The proposed industrial action follows concerns raised by employee unions over various issues affecting bank employees and the banking sector.
The biggest unresolved issue is the demand to make all Saturdays holidays for bank employees. At present, banks are closed on the second and fourth Saturdays, while other Saturdays are generally working days.
Bank unions have also opposed changes to the Performance Linked Incentive (PLI) structure. The unions had objected to the revised arrangement and sought discussions before implementation.
Union demands also include issues related to pension benefits, including restoration of the Old Pension Scheme and changes concerning pension/dearness allowance for retirees.
The decision to operate branches on Sunday has also drawn opposition from some bank employee organisations. The All India Bank Officers' Association (AIBOA), in a statement issued on September 23, advised its members not to report for duty on September 27.UNI VK AAB
