Basak, Fernandes, Hassan, Abhishek lead India charge

Bengaluru, Oct 11 (UNI) Kunal Basak, Aaron John Fernandes, Mohammed Hassan C and Abhishek V spearheaded India's strong showing at the 2nd Asian Masters Swimming Championship 2026, claiming age-category titles across the men's 50m freestyle and 200m individual medley events as Indian swimmers delivered a series of podium finishes across generations.
Fernandes opened India's impressive account in the men's 50m freestyle, winning the 25–29 age category in 24.95 seconds, with Basak finishing second in 25.59 seconds. Mohammed Hassan C topped the 30–34 category in 25.04 seconds, while GN Sriranga and Ranjith R completed an Indian sweep of the podium, clocking 25.89 and 26.72 seconds, respectively.
Basak returned to the pool to claim the men's 200m individual medley title in the 25–29 category, clocking 2:27.62. Abhishek V added another title for India in the 35–39 category, winning in 2:31.83, while Sagar Kishor Kamble topped the 30–34 category in 2:38.79.
The men's freestyle events produced a succession of Indian victories across the age groups. Shafeeque Mohammed M won the 35–39 category in 27.49 seconds, Partha Varanashi claimed the 40–44 title in 25.88 seconds and Sachin Kakkar topped the 45–49 category in 26.74 seconds.
Rajimon S secured the 50–54 title in 28.69 seconds, edging Girish Suvarna Bengre by a razor-thin 0.01 seconds. Moeen Shirazi won the 55–59 category in 27.28 seconds, while Homi Farrok Kaka (28.88) and Bijendra Ray (32.52) topped the 60–64 and 65–69 categories, respectively.
Nongmaithem Narjit Singh won the 70–74 category in 33.35 seconds, Sapam Mohendro Singh claimed the 75–79 title in 44.01 seconds, and K C Sebastian emerged victorious in the 80-and-over category in 46.03 seconds, underlining the breadth of India's masters swimming contingent.
Indian women also made their presence felt in the 50m freestyle, with Sneha T winning the 30–34 category in 31.73 seconds and Praditha P claiming the 35–39 title in 32.92 seconds. Aarti Bajirao Patil finished second in the 25–29 category in 29.30 seconds, while Malavika Vishwanath secured third place in 29.94 seconds.
Varuna Mayya won the 40–44 category in 34.91 seconds, while Snehal Bhal topped the 45–49 group in 33.98 seconds. Bindumol PR won the 50–54 category in 39.91 seconds, and Suseela P M claimed the 55–59 title in 38.63 seconds.
PS Sreekumari won the 60–64 category in 43.74 seconds, while Sunita Rana Agarwal topped the 65–69 group in 36.97 seconds. Vidya Singh won the 70–74 category in 58.48 seconds, Lalitha Vijayaraghavan claimed the 75–79 title in 1:38.20, and Bakula Ramanlal Patel topped the 80-and-over category in 1:11.45.
India continued its strong showing in the men's 200m individual medley through Vimal Kumar M, who won the 40–44 category in 2:44.09. Bablu Haldar topped the 50–54 group in 2:59.85, while Cherian Thomas won the 60–64 category in 3:07.37. Mahadeo Taware claimed the 65–69 title in 3:39.30, Sekhar Kula Varanasi won the 70–74 category in 3:36.93, and Mohan Reddy H Sawkar triumphed in the 75–79 group in 6:09.95.
There were also podium finishes for Indian swimmers in categories won by overseas competitors. Oman’s Khalid Mohammed Al Kulaibi won the 45–49 individual medley in 2:38.92, with India’s Ng Birola Singha finishing second in 2:46.72. Iran’s Alireza Naziri M claimed the 55–59 title in 3:10.17, followed by India’s Bijender Singh Tokas in 3:13.23.
The results highlighted India's competitive depth in masters swimming, with swimmers across age groups securing titles and podium places in events demanding speed, endurance and versatility. The performances also underscored the continuing participation of veteran athletes in competitive swimming at the continental level.
