Bengal: Asansol-Durgapur Police Commissionerate cracks Nivedita Palace burglary case, arrests three

Asansol, Oct 27 (UNI) The Asansol-Durgapur Police Commissionerate (ADPC) has cracked the Nivedita Palace burglary case with the arrest of three persons, including two alleged burglars and a receiver of stolen property, following an investigation based on CCTV footage and hotel records.
The burglary took place on the afternoon of September 16 at Nivedita Palace, the Benachity residence of contractor Mohan Banerjee.
The accused allegedly took advantage of the brief period when the house was unattended, opened two gates, broke into a cupboard and fled with Rs 25,000 in cash and jewellery worth between Rs 70 lakh and Rs 80 lakh.
According to the victim's wife, the burglary took place while family members were away attending a funeral, college and a religious gathering. The house was unattended for around one hour and 40 minutes.
While initial suspicion centred on the domestic help, CCTV footage from the neighbourhood reportedly showed two men, Mohammad Karim of Bhangar and Mohammad Amir of Tangra, behaving suspiciously.
Investigators traced their movements to a local hotel and obtained their phone numbers and registration details from its guest records.
A police team subsequently arrested Amir in Tangra. Interrogation led investigators to Karim, who was arrested in East Burdwan.
Police said the investigation exposed a 10-member burglary gang allegedly operating across West Bengal.
Karim, described as the gang leader, reportedly confessed to a series of burglaries across Bankura, Birbhum, East Burdwan and Kolkata. He is alleged to have been involved in such crimes for around 15 years and usually carried out burglaries with one associate at a time.
According to investigators, the gang operated in a planned manner, booking hotel rooms in districts where it intended to strike and scouting residential neighbourhoods the following morning.
Once they identified a locked house, the accused allegedly carried out the burglary within a short period before leaving the area.
Acting on information obtained during interrogation, police raided Verma Jewellers in Garden Reach and arrested its 65-year-old owner, Shankar Prasad Verma, who is alleged to have received stolen property in exchange for cash. Police claimed that the shop had no legitimate stock.
Officers recovered Rs 35,000 in cash and 30 grams of gold jewellery allegedly linked to the Nivedita Palace burglary.
Police said Karim and Verma had previous arrest records in connection with cases registered at Tangra, Dum Dum, Garden Reach and Lalbazar. Investigators are examining the accused's possible involvement in other unsolved burglaries.
On Monday, all three accused were remanded to a further seven days of police custody after their initial remand expired.
The extension is linked to a separate theft case under Bijon Police Outpost, as investigators probe their alleged involvement in other regional burglaries.
“The three arrested suspects remain in police custody. Police are currently verifying their links to other unresolved burglary cases across the state to recover more stolen property,” said Raspreet Singh, DCP (East), ADPC.
