Bengal: Asansol Police constable dies of gunshot wounds in Durgapur; suicide suspected

Asansol, Nov 4 (UNI) An on-duty police constable of the Asansol-Durgapur Police Commissionerate (ADPC), identified as Sanjay Jana, died after sustaining multiple gunshot wounds to his head in Durgapur on Tuesday night.
Jana, a resident of Midnapore, was posted with the Kanksa Traffic Guard. Preliminary police reports suggest that he allegedly shot himself with his service revolver, firing four consecutive rounds while stationed on the service road of the national highway in Panagarh.
According to police sources, the incident occurred while Jana was deployed outside a local hotel. While his colleagues were seated inside the establishment, he reportedly stepped out of the police vehicle and began walking nearby before gunshots were heard.
Alerted by the sound of gunfire, his colleagues rushed outside and found Jana lying in a pool of blood. He was immediately taken to a private hospital in Bidhannagar, where doctors declared him dead on arrival.
ADPC Commissioner of Police Dr Pranab Kumar confirmed the death, stating, "He shot himself. When he was taken to the hospital, he was declared dead after an initial medical assessment. The exact cause and circumstances behind the death are currently under investigation."
The area has been cordoned off with guardrails to preserve the scene for investigation. A forensic team is expected to visit the spot to collect ballistic samples and other evidence.
While the motive behind the fatal shooting remains unknown, police have launched an investigation to ascertain the circumstances that led to the incident.
