Bengal: Bandhan Bank deputy manager, seven employees arrested in Nadia mule account racket

Krishnagar, Oct 29 (UNI) A deputy manager and seven other employees of Bandhan Bank have been arrested for allegedly opening mule accounts and helping route money generated through cyber fraud in return for commissions, as police probe a suspected link between bank officials and a wider cybercrime network in Nadia’s Tehatta subdivision.
The eight employees, attached to different bank branches, were arrested by Tehatta police following an investigation into the alleged use of bank accounts to channel proceeds of cybercrime and conceal their origin.
The arrests followed inputs from the cybercrime wing in New Town, which examined account-opening records and identified bank officials allegedly linked to multiple suspicious accounts.
“We had received information that several mule accounts had been opened through that branch. Our cybercrime wing examined the accounts and checked which bank officials had opened them. In some cases, the same employee was found to have opened 15–16 mule accounts. We verified the information and took action,” Krishnagar Police District Superintendent of Police Atul V told The Statesman.
The arrested employees have been identified as Samarjit Pramanik, Jaydev Durlabh, Tarun Biswas, Pradip Sarkar, Palash Mondal, Debashis Dalal, Bishnudev Mondal and Dayamay Roy. They were arrested during raids across different police station areas in the Tehatta subdivision on Wednesday and produced before the Tehatta subdivision court on Thursday.
According to police sources, the accused allegedly helped open multiple bank accounts used to route money obtained through cyber fraud. Investigators suspect that the money was transferred through a chain of accounts to conceal its source and that the accounts may have been used to launder large sums.
The accounts were allegedly facilitated in exchange for commissions of two to three per cent. Investigators are examining whether financial incentives were offered to induce people to provide or facilitate the opening of bank accounts.
The probe gained momentum after police arrested 37 people in earlier raids across the subdivision in connection with cyber fraud cases. Their interrogation allegedly provided leads about other members of the network, resulting in the latest arrests.
With the eight fresh arrests, the total number of people arrested in the related cases in the Tehatta area has crossed 40, police sources said.
Investigators are now attempting to establish the extent of the alleged network, trace the movement of money through the mule accounts and identify other suspected facilitators.
