Bengal: Congress Nandigram candidate faces ‘shown arrest’ in 2007 case

Midnapore, Sep 20 (UNI) Congress’s Nandigram Assembly bypoll candidate Milan Pradhan, who is already in judicial custody in connection with a 2007 murder case, faces another legal proceeding in a separate case dating back nearly two decades.
Nandigram police have moved the Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate’s Court in Haldia seeking permission to show Pradhan arrested in connection with a case arising from Nandigram Police Station registered on January 8, 2007.
According to the police petition, Pradhan, 58, of Gangra in Nandigram, was arrested on September 1 in another case, arising from Nandigram PS registered on November 8, 2007.
He was produced before the Haldia court on September 19 and is currently lodged at the Haldia Sub-Correctional Home.
Police said a warrant of arrest had already been issued against Pradhan in the January 2007 case.
As he is currently in judicial custody in the other case, Nandigram police have sought a formal “shown arrest” in the warrant case and necessary orders from the court.
The petition was submitted by ASI Pradip Kumar Panda of Nandigram police station and forwarded by the inspector-in-charge.
The documents submitted with it include the original arrest warrant, a copy of the arrest memo and an inspection memo.
The development comes ahead of the October 6 Nandigram Assembly bypoll, in which Pradhan is contesting as the Congress candidate.
East Midnapore district Congress president Sheikh Matin alleged that the ruling side was using old cases to prevent Pradhan from campaigning.
“The ruling side is desperately trying to prevent our candidate from campaigning by grilling him in old cases,” Matin told UNI.
He alleged that the Congress candidate’s candidature had put the ruling dispensation under pressure.
