Bengal: Indian Air Force steps up awareness drive in Panagarh over bird-strike threat

Asansol, Sep 27 (UNI) The Indian Air Force (IAF) authorities at Air Force Station Arjan Singh in Panagarh, under the Eastern Command in West Bengal's West Burdwan district, have launched a public awareness drive among residents and traders to address concerns over flight safety.
Established shortly after Independence, the airbase witnesses regular fighter jet deployments for surveillance and strategic exercises, while pilots also undergo training there. However, improper waste disposal in areas surrounding the base has emerged as a major safety concern for aircraft operating in the vicinity.
Fish, meat and vegetable vendors in the densely populated commercial areas reportedly dump organic waste in open spaces and on public roads instead of using designated disposal systems. The rotting waste attracts large numbers of birds, including vultures, kites and crows, into the low-altitude airspace used by aircraft during take-offs and landings.
A bird strike in such conditions can pose a serious risk to aircraft and the safety of people in the area, besides potentially causing damage to defence equipment.
In response, IAF officials have been conducting awareness camps for local residents and traders. The authorities have asked traders and residents to use lidded dustbins for meat and fish waste. They have also been advised to ensure that marketplace waste is cleared immediately after business hours and handed over to the local panchayat's designated waste management teams.
IAF officials stressed the need for cooperation from the local community to reduce the risk posed by birds around the airbase.
The Panagarh Bazar Traders Association has pledged its cooperation with the initiative. Authorities are also considering penalties for those found dumping waste in violation of the guidelines.
Air Force Station Arjan Singh, formerly known as Panagarh Airport, is located around 24 km southeast of Durgapur and operates under the Eastern Air Command. The station also operates military transport flights, including those using the Lockheed Martin C-130J Super Hercules aircraft of No. 87 Squadron, IAF.
