Bengal: Maoist leader Asim Mandal arrested in East Midnapore

Ranchi / Kolkata, Sep 17 (UNI) CPI (Maoist) central committee member Asim Mandal alias Akash was arrested from Lalat area of Patashpur in East Midnapore district, West Bengal, police said on Thursday.
Mandal, who carries a combined bounty of Rs 2.20 crore declared by the Jharkhand and Odisha governments, was arrested by the Kolkata Police Special Task Force (STF), according to the information available in the case.
Earlier reports had suggested that Mandal had surrendered in West Bengal. However, a social media post by West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari said he was arrested by the Kolkata Police STF and praised the officers and personnel involved in the operation.
According to the post, Mandal had been evading law enforcement agencies for more than 15 years in inter-state forest areas. Police traced him based on technical intelligence and arrested him from East Midnapore.
Mandal is also identified by police as the secretary of the CPI (Maoist) West Bengal State Committee-I.
According to Jharkhand Police records, Mandal had been active in the border areas of West Bengal, Jharkhand and Odisha and was wanted in several cases involving alleged encounters and attacks on security personnel.
Police records cited in the report include incidents in Chaibasa and East Singhbhum in which security personnel were killed or injured. His role in these cases is under investigation.
Security agencies are questioning Mandal and also examining his alleged links with the Maoist network and in other cases registered against him.
