Bengal: Three-year-old tigress brought from Valmiki Tiger Reserve ready for release on Oct 2

Siliguri, Sep 30 (UNI) A three-year-old tigress brought from the Valmiki Tiger Reserve in Bihar for reintroduction in West Bengal is healthy and showing normal behaviour, state West Bengal Forest Minister Manoj Kumar Oraon said on Wednesday.
The tigress was tranquilised at around 5:30 pm on Tuesday after forest officials made sustained efforts for several days despite heavy rainfall. After completing the necessary procedures, the animal was lifted from the reserve and airlifted to Hasimara during the night. It was subsequently brought to the designated location at Buxa Tiger Reserve in Alipurduar, West Bengal, where it is being kept under observation.
“We had targeted a young tigress for the reintroduction programme and we have got exactly that. She is healthy, and her behaviour is completely normal,” the Forest Minister said while speaking to reporters.
He said the tigress was expected to remain healthy and fit over the next two days and would be formally released at around 9 am on October 2.
The minister held a preparatory meeting with senior officials of the Forest Department on Wednesday to review arrangements for the release programme. He later visited the field location where the tigress is being kept and from where she will be released.
Union Environment, Forest and Climate Change Minister Bhupender Yadav and West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari are scheduled to attend the programme.
The Forest Minister appealed to locals to cooperate with the Forest Department and said there was no reason for panic.
He said adequate arrangements had been made to monitor the tigress after her release. If she moves towards a village, forest officials would reach the area before the animal, he said.
“This is the first tiger being reintroduced in this manner. We want the cooperation and good wishes of the people,” Oraon said, adding that the necessary infrastructure and management arrangements had been put in place.
