South Point classroom attack raises concern over student aggression: Minister Dipak Barman

Kolkata, Oct 1 (UNI) School Education Minister Dipak Barman called for a closer examination of the psychological condition of children and the reasons behind growing aggression among students.
Reacting to Wednesday’s incident, in which a Class IX student allegedly attacked a classmate with a sharp knife inside their classroom, Barman said the episode was “extremely unfortunate and concerning”.
The minister said a dispute over a torn book had escalated into an attack on a fellow student, raising questions about the mindset of school children.
“Books getting torn is a common matter among children. But how can it result in a student attacking a classmate with a knife? This raises a serious question about where the psychology of children is heading and why aggression is increasing,” Barman said.
The minister also called for experts and sociologists to examine the issue and provide guidance on addressing such behaviour among children.
The incident at South Point School took place on Wednesday afternoon in a classroom in the presence of a teacher.
During an argument between two Class IX students, one allegedly took out a sharp knife from his schoolbag and attacked the other student on the neck and hand.
The injured student was rushed to a private hospital in a critical condition and underwent surgery.
His condition is now reported to be stable.
Police began an investigation after the incident and are examining a written complaint submitted by the school authorities.
The student accused of the attack was removed from the classroom and given psychological counselling, while his parents were informed.
Authorities are investigating how the 15-year-old student was able to bring a sharp object into the school and the circumstances behind it.
Police are also examining whether there was any previous dispute between the two students or whether the confrontation escalated suddenly.
