Bengal: Woman civic volunteer detained after confrontation with Mamata Banerjee; TMC alleges knife attack

Kolkata, Oct 13 (UNI) A woman civic volunteer was detained after she allegedly confronted former West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee outside the latter’s Kalighat residence on Tuesday, police said.
The Trinamool Congress’s Kalighat faction, meanwhile, claimed that the incident involved an attempted knife attack on its leader.
Police identified the woman as 38-year-old Anusua Saha, posted at West Port Police Station. She was detained after allegedly confronting Banerjee as the former Chief Minister was leaving her residence.
“An incident occurred at the residence of the former Chief Minister when she was exiting the residence. One Anusua Saha confronted her, leading to a heated altercation.
“The woman was subsequently detained by the police personnel on duty. Meanwhile, a complaint was lodged by TMC members. Necessary action is being taken as per law,” a police officer said.
Trinamool Congress MP Dola Sen alleged that the woman, who claimed to be Banerjee’s niece, was carrying a knife and attempted to attack the leader around 6 pm.
Sen further claimed that the woman hurled verbal abuse while standing at the entrance to Banerjee’s Kalighat residence and later lay down on the street.
Sen lodged a complaint with Kalighat Police Station by emailing the officer-in-charge regarding the alleged incident.
According to the MP, she, Banerjee and Kalighat-based leader Baiswanor Chattopadhyay were on their way to the Kalighat Milan Sangha Puja when the woman rushed towards the Trinamool supremo, addressing her as “Pisi” (aunt).
Sen claimed that the woman was intoxicated and attempted to lunge at Banerjee before lying down on the street and shouting abuses.
The police officer said Saha, a resident of S N Roy Road under New Alipore Police Station, had received her posting on November 11, 2011.
