Bhima Koregaon Memorial: Committee seeks swift PMRDA clearance to begin construction

Pune, Sep 29 (UNI) The Bhima Koregaon Vijaystambh Memorial Committee has urged the Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA) to approve the development plan for the Bhima Koregaon Vijaystambh National Memorial and immediately begin work on the proposed grand memorial.
A delegation of the committee met PMRDA Commissioner Dr Abhijit Chaudhary and submitted a memorandum seeking speedy approval of the development plan and reservation required for the memorial project.
Former Pune Deputy Mayor Dr Siddharth Dhende said January 1, 2027, will mark 100 years since Dr B R Ambedkar's historic visit to the Bhima Koregaon Vijaystambh. The centenary should be marked by initiating work on the memorial without further delay, he added.
Dhende urged the PMRDA commissioner to expedite approval of the development plan and the required reservation so that the project could move forward.
Meanwhile, Rahul Dambale of the Bhima Koregaon Vijaystambh Memorial Committee said the state government had made a provision of Rs 100 crore for the memorial over the past five to seven years, but not a single rupee had reportedly been spent on actual construction so far.
Calling the delay unfortunate, Dambale urged the administration to remove technical and administrative hurdles and start the work at the earliest.
Republican Party leader Ashok Kamble said the Vijaystambh is an important symbol of identity and inspiration for the Ambedkarite community. He further appealed to the administration to initiate the construction work without any further delay.
