Biennial elections to 11 seats of UP Legislative Council on Friday

By Manoj Bhadra
Lucknow, Oct 22 (UNI) The fate of 152 candidates contesting biennial elections to 11 Uttar Pradesh Legislative Council seats, comprising five graduates' and six teachers' constituencies, will be decided in polling scheduled for Friday.
Polling will be held from 8 am to 4 pm through ballot papers at 2,697 polling stations, where 14,81,310 electors are eligible to cast their votes. Counting of votes will take place on October 27.
The elections are witnessing a direct contest between the ruling BJP and the Samajwadi Party (SP), with both parties fielding candidates in all 11 constituencies ahead of the Assembly polls. However, rebel candidates and Independents could upset the prospects of nominees of the two parties in some seats.
Though candidates have been fielded by political parties, election symbols will not appear on the ballot papers.
The Election Commission has made elaborate arrangements to ensure peaceful polling.
The elections are being conducted under the proportional representation system through the single transferable vote. Voters must indicate their preferences numerically, with the figure '1' mandatory against their first choice.
Among the graduates' constituencies, Varanasi has the highest number of candidates at 24, followed by Lucknow with 16, Agra and Allahabad-Jhansi with 13 each, and Meerut with eight.

Election officials said voters must produce their electoral photo identity cards or approved alternative identification documents, including Aadhaar, PAN card, driving licence or passport.
Violet sketch pens will be provided at polling stations for marking ballot papers. The NOTA option will not be available.
The elections are being held to fill vacancies arising from the expiry of the terms of sitting members on December 6, 2026.
