Bihar govt withdraws minister of state status of Anant Singh's wife Neelam Devi

Patna, Oct 26 (UNI) Close on the heels of the expulsion of Mokama MLA Anant Singh and his wife, former MLA Neelam Devi, from the Janata Dal (United), the Bihar government has removed Neelam Devi from the Patna District 20-Point Programme Implementation Committee, resulting in the withdrawal of her minister of state status.
The government has also directed Neelam Devi to vacate official bungalow number 1, allotted to her on Mall Road in the state capital, by November 25.
Neelam Devi had been allotted the official residence in May this year in view of her position as a member of the committee, which carried the status of a minister of state.
The latest action comes amid escalating tensions between Anant Singh and the JDU. On October 24, the party expelled Anant Singh and Neelam Devi for six years over alleged anti-party activities.
The JDU cited Singh's alleged violation of party directives, his use of inappropriate language against the party's top leadership and his campaigning for a candidate belonging to another party. The party had also recommended that the Speaker of the Bihar Legislative Assembly initiate action concerning Singh's Assembly membership.
The political controversy erupted during the Bihar Legislative Council election for the Patna Graduate's constituency, which concluded on October 23. The JDU had fielded its sitting MLC, Neeraj Kumar, but Anant Singh campaigned for Anuj Singh, the Jan Suraaj Party candidate, instead of supporting the party's official nominee. Singh had also publicly expressed his desire to see Neeraj Kumar defeated.
The two leaders have been political rivals, with Anant Singh alleging that Neeraj Kumar had worked against him in previous elections.
The JDU leadership reportedly attempted to persuade Singh to support its official candidate. union Minister Rajiv Ranjan Singh, popularly known as Lalan Singh, was also involved in efforts to resolve the dispute, but Anant Singh remained firm in his position.
