BJP accuses Himachal government of taking credit for Centre-funded UDAN projects

Shimla, Oct 23 (UNI)BJP MP Suresh Kashyap on Friday accused the Congress government in Himachal Pradesh of taking credit for development projects funded under Central schemes, alleging that the government led by Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu was focusing more on inaugurations and publicity than on development.
Kashyap said the Centre's Regional Connectivity Scheme, UDAN, was supporting the development of aviation infrastructure and heliports in Himachal Pradesh, but the state government was attempting to project these initiatives as its own achievements.
Citing official figures presented in Parliament, the BJP MP said Rs 213.52 crore had been allocated for aviation infrastructure in Himachal Pradesh under the UDAN scheme till June 2024, of which Rs 160.48 crore had been utilised. By February 2026, 38 regional air routes had been operationalised in the state, while four heliports had been connected under the regional air connectivity initiative.
He said the figures reflected the Centre's commitment to improving connectivity in remote and inaccessible areas of the hill state.
Questioning the state government's approach, Kashyap asked why the contribution of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Central government was not being adequately acknowledged at inauguration ceremonies when the scheme and financial assistance were being provided by the Centre.
He also accused the Congress government of ignoring BJP MPs during inauguration programmes and alleged that excluding elected representatives from public development events violated democratic conventions and political propriety.
Elected representatives, he said, should be given due recognition and participation in development projects in their constituencies, irrespective of political affiliations.
Referring to the Palampur heliport project, Kashyap said it had also been identified under the UDAN scheme. Tenders for its development had been issued, but regular helicopter services were yet to commence.
He alleged that the state government was preparing to project the Palampur heliport as an achievement of the Congress government and the Chief Minister.
Kashyap sought details of the respective financial contributions of the Centre and the state government towards the development of the Palampur heliport and other such facilities. He asked the government to disclose the funds sanctioned and spent, along with the status of completed and pending works.
The BJP MP said the state government should place all relevant financial and construction details in the public domain to ensure transparency and accountability.
“Taking credit for Central schemes does not change who is responsible for their development,” he said, asserting that the Modi government was continuing to support Himachal Pradesh's development.
Kashyap demanded that the Centre's contribution under the UDAN scheme be clearly acknowledged at inauguration ceremonies, that concerned MPs be given due respect and participation, and that the financial and construction status of all heliport projects, including Palampur, be made public.
He urged Sukhu to move away from what he termed credit-seeking politics and focus on completing projects on time and providing tangible facilities to the people of the state.
