Haryana: CCSHAU Kaul tests portable crop residue processing system to curb stubble burning, handle 2 tonnes per hour

Jind, Oct 23 (UNI) Haryana has taken a significant step towards monetising paddy straw by piloting Japanese pelletisation technology that promises to convert agricultural residue into valuable fuel feedstock directly at the farmgate, potentially giving farmers a compelling financial incentive to keep their fields fire-free.
A delegation from Japan, led by Hiroyuki Maeda, an environmental engineering professional and manager-scientist with that country's environmental department, evaluated the portable pellet-making system at the Haryana Agricultural Management and Extension Training Institute (HAMETI) in Jind today. Anupam Saini, Assistant Director representing the Government of India, joined the assessment alongside the Joint Director of Agriculture Dr Mahabir, and the HAMETI Director Dr Surender Yadav.
According to Deputy Director of Agriculture Dr Sukhdev Singh, the technology is being trialled at the College of Agriculture, Kaul, under Chaudhary Charan Singh Haryana Agricultural University, to examine its field utility, operational efficiency and commercial viability under local agro-climatic conditions. The system is designed to process roughly two tonnes of paddy straw into pellets per hour without transporting the residue to a central facility, thereby cutting logistics costs and making on-farm residue management practically feasible.
The quality, durability and energy value of the pellets produced will be rigorously tested in a phased evaluation scheduled to continue until March next year. Officials said any decision on wider adoption across the state's paddy belt will be taken only after a thorough review of the trial data, with the overarching goal of determining whether decentralised pellet production can offer a scalable, farmer-friendly solution to the stubble-burning challenge while unlocking an additional revenue channel from what is presently treated as waste.
The initiative aligns with Haryana's broader push to tackle air pollution through ex-situ residue management, even as the administration enforces strict penalties and surveillance to curb farm fires during the harvesting season.
