New Delhi, Oct 14 (UNI) Smaller initial public offerings (IPOs) have delivered stronger listing-day gains than larger issues in 2026, reflecting investor appetite for smaller companies even as concerns over the sustainability of market valuations persist, according to a report by Kotak Institutional Equities.
The brokerage's report, titled 'Two Markets, One Crowd', found that small IPOs generated weighted-average listing gains of 17 per cent so far this year. The corresponding returns stood at 13 per cent for mid-sized offerings and 4 per cent for large IPOs, highlighting the widening gap in post-listing performance across issue sizes.
The preference for smaller companies has also extended to the broader stock market. Over the past six months, the Nifty Smallcap 100 index has advanced 16 per cent, while the Nifty Midcap 100 has gained 3 per cent. The benchmark Nifty 50, meanwhile, declined 5 per cent over the same period.
The contrasting performance suggests that investor interest in smaller businesses is not confined to newly listed companies but is also visible in the secondary market, where small-cap stocks have outperformed their larger peers.
For its analysis, Kotak classified IPOs into three categories according to issue size. Offerings below Rs 1,000 crore were categorised as small IPOs, those between Rs 1,000 crore and Rs 5,000 crore as mid-sized issues, and offerings exceeding Rs 5,000 crore as large IPOs.
The weighted-average listing gain for smaller issues was more than four times the return recorded by large IPOs. Mid-sized offerings also performed better than larger issues, although their gains remained below those of small IPOs.
Listing gains measure the difference between an IPO's issue price and its market price on the first day of trading. While such returns can reward investors who receive allotments, they do not necessarily indicate how a stock will perform over the longer term.
The performance gap also comes against a backdrop of sustained activity in India's primary market. The country has seen 96 IPOs raise approximately $12 billion so far in 2026, according to Kotak's report.
By comparison, 103 IPOs raised $20 billion during 2025, while 91 offerings mobilised $19 billion in 2024. Although the number of public issues in 2026 remains substantial, the aggregate amount raised so far is lower than the full-year totals recorded in the previous two years.
Despite the strong performance of smaller companies, the brokerage has cautioned that market gains may prove difficult to sustain unless corporate earnings meet investor expectations.
Strong listing-day returns and rising small-cap valuations can reflect optimism about future business prospects. However, if companies fail to deliver the earnings growth underpinning those expectations, their share prices could face pressure.
The divergence between small-cap stocks and the Nifty 50 also highlights the uneven nature of the market rally. While smaller companies have recorded gains, large-cap stocks have weakened over the same six-month period.
