BWF to test scoring system in global badminton events

Beijing, Apr 4 (UNI) The World Badminton Federation (BWF) will test a new 3x15 scoring system across 10 international tournaments starting May 2025, the governing body announced Thursday.

Under the trial rules, matches will be played as best-of-three games, with each game won by the first player to reach 15 points. If tied at 14-14, a player must secure a two-point lead, with games capped at 21 points.

The trials, spanning Grade 3 tournaments in Mexico, Venezuela, Czech Republic, Northern Mariana Islands, Malaysia, Peru, Uganda, Australia, Vietnam and China, aim to assess whether the shorter format enhances match intensity and reduces injury risks while maintaining spectator appeal.

The BWF Council will review data and stakeholder feedback before voting on a permanent change at its 2026 Annual General Meeting. UNI XINHUA AKT SSP
