California leaders slam Trump for his remarks that Iran could 'take out' LA and San Diego, call comments 'deranged' and 'irresponsible'

Nebraska, Oct 6 (UNI) Leaders in California have condemned President Donald Trump after he suggested Iran could "take out" Los Angeles and San Diego, calling the comments irresponsible and denounced the leader as "deranged."
Speaking at a campaign rally in Grand Island, Nebraska, on Monday, Trump described the economic impact of the war with Iran as a "small price to pay" for keeping the US and the world safe.
He went on to call Iran war as "artificial," but said he nonetheless wanted to see a "total victory."
"They can take out a city," Trump said in Grand Island. "Let them take out Los Angeles. Let them take out San Diego." The crowd applauded, and while it was not immediately clear what Trump meant, the comments were quickly condemned by Newsom and other California officials.
It was not immediately clear what Trump meant by his remarks, and whether he was speaking about a potential Iranian attack, or speaking in hypotheticals and making a rhetorical point about the cost of the war.
US officials have previously said Iran does not currently have the capability to launch a direct ballistic missile attack on the US mainland.
The remarks were, however, not taken kindly by US leaders, with California Governor Gavin Newsom condemning the remarks, and writing on X that Trump was "deranged and dangerous". His press office separately said the president was advocating an attack on more than 10 million US residents in two of the country's largest cities.
Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass accused Trump of making "irresponsible threats" that could compromise the safety of the city.
"The role of a president is to protect the country, not to actively threaten it and encourage attacks on American lives," Bass said.
San Diego Mayor Todd Gloria said his city was "not collateral damage" and "not expendable".
"And we are never a 'small price to pay'," Gloria wrote on X, urging Trump to keep the city out of his "reckless war talk".
The remarks, made during a speech lasting nearly 90 minutes, prompted debate over what Trump intended to convey.
Some conservative activists argued that his reference to a "small price to pay" was about higher fuel prices caused by the war, rather than suggesting that the loss of a US city was an acceptable outcome.
The White House did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
Trump has previously argued that allowing Iran to develop a nuclear weapon would pose a threat to US cities and has claimed that Tehran was developing missiles capable of eventually reaching US territory.
The comments came during Trump's visit to Nebraska, where he was campaigning for Republican candidates ahead of the November midterm elections. In California, where Republican gubernatorial candidate Steve Hilton has Trump's endorsement, the remarks drew criticism.
"Thirteen million Californians call LA and San Diego counties home," said Xavier Becerra, the Democratic nominee for governor. "Their lives are not a 'small price to pay' or a punchline for Donald Trump."
