Captain Smit Machchhar being shifted to Abu Dhabi for continued medical attention; Indian Ambassador meets brave Indian pilot

New Delhi, Oct 1 (UNI) FlyDubai's Indian pilot Captain Smit Machchhar, who suffered grievous injuries after being stabbed by his co-pilot onboard flight FZ 1073, has been shifted to Abu Dhabi for continued medical attention and recovery, the MEA said today.
The Indian Ambassador in the UAE also met Captain Machchhar in hospital and enquired about his well being.
In a late evening statement, the MEA said that the government continues to closely follow the health condition of Captain Smit Machchhar, an Indian national and the brave pilot of FlyDubai flight FZ 1073.
"After receiving initial medical treatment in a hospital in Tabuk, Saudi Arabia, he has now been shifted to Abu Dhabi for continued medical attention and recovery.
"Our Ambassador in UAE met Captain Machchhar in hospital and enquired about his well being."
Earlier, the ambassador met the pilot's family and assured all possible support for the Captain’s health and well-being.
"Our Embassy in Abu Dhabi and Consulate in Dubai are in close touch with the local authorities in the matter.
"We once again salute Captain Smit Machchhar’s valour and courage. We also convey our deep appreciation for the admiration and support he has received from across the world for his act of gallantry."
Machchhar was the captain of flydubai Flight FZ1073, a Boeing 737 MAX 8 operating from Dubai to Tel Aviv on September 30, and carrying around 174 passengers, mostly Israelis, and crew. The plane was forced to make an emergency diversion to Tabuk in north-western Saudi Arabia following the stabbing incident.
According to reports, the co-pilot attacked Machchhar with a knife and attempted to take control of the aircraft, in an alleged attempt to crash the plane. During the confrontation, the aircraft reportedly lost around 14,300 feet in approximately 37 seconds, according to flight-tracking data. An emergency was subsequently declared and the aircraft was diverted to Tabuk, where it landed safely.
Despite sustaining serious injuries, Machchhar is reported to have fought back and unlocked the cockpit door, enabling other crew members and passengers to intervene and subdue the attacker.
His bravery and quick thinking have been praised across the world, with world leaders calling him a hero.
