CBI-ACB arrests WCL supervisor for accepting Rs 40,000 bribe

Nagpur, Sep 30 (UNI) The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), Anti-Corruption Bureau , on Wednesday arrested a Senior Supervisor (Civil) of Western Coalfields Limited (WCL), Umred Area, for allegedly accepting a bribe of Rs 40,000 from a contractor for facilitating the release of a payment bill, officials said.
According to the CBI, a written complaint was received on September 29 alleging that Pawan Nakhate, Senior Supervisor (Civil) at Gokul Murpar Sub Area of WCL's Umred Area, had demanded Rs 50,000, stated to be around two per cent of the contractor's bill amount.
The complainant had been awarded a contract for construction of two borewells, installation of submersible pumps and laying of internal main and distribution pipelines for drinking water supply at the rehabilitation site of Pirwa village.
According to the complaint, the total value of the bill was Rs 25,35,693 and a bribe was allegedly demanded in return for clearing it at the rate of two per cent of the bill amount.
During the verification, it was found that Nakhate had demanded Rs 44,000, calculated at 2 per cent of the approximately Rs 22 lakh amount already paid, along with Rs 10,000 which had not been paid on an earlier occasion, making the total demand Rs 54,000.
During the verification proceedings, following a negotiations, he reduced the demand to Rs 50,000.
Following verification of the allegations, the CBI registered a case against the accused under Section 7 of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988, as amended in 2018.
The agency laid a trap on September 30 and allegedly caught the official red-handed near Gangapur square at Umred in Maharashtra's Nagpur district while accepting Rs 40,000 from the complainant.
The accused was arrested and further investigation is in progress, the CBI added.
