CBI arrests Nirav Modi associate Sandeep Mistry in Dubai, brought to Mumbai for custodial interrogation

Mumbai, Sept 29 (UNI) The Central Bureau of Investigation has arrested Sandeep Mistry, a close associate of fugitive diamantaire Nirav Modi, in Dubai and brought him to Mumbai for further investigation in the Punjab National Bank fraud case.
Mistry is expected to be produced before the special court hearing of the case, where the CBI is likely to seek his custody for custodial interrogation.
Mistry served as a director of Fancy Creations Ltd., a Hong Kong based company associated with Modi. The Enforcement Directorate has recently initiated proceedings seeking to declare Mistry a fugitive economic offender, which could allow the agency to confiscate assets held by him in India and abroad.
According to the prosecution, Mistry, along with Modi's brother Nehal Modi and another wanted accused, Mihir Bhansali, allegedly threatened employees who were serving as dummy directors of companies linked to Modi in Dubai after the case was registered in India.
The employees were allegedly forced to leave Dubai and move to Cairo after being threatened with arrest in connection with the case, the prosecution has alleged.
Investigators have also alleged that the accused destroyed the employees' mobile phones in an attempt to destroy evidence. The directors later returned to India and gave statements to the CBI, according to the prosecution.
One of the directors reportedly told the CBI that he wanted to return to India but had allegedly been given death threat. The directors had recorded the telephone calls containing the alleged threats and subsequently submitted the recordings to the investigating agency.
The arrest of Mistry comes while the extradition proceedings against Nirav Modi continue to remain prolonged. The CBI is now expected to question Mistry regarding the allegations concerning the dummy directors, the alleged threats, destruction of evidence and other circumstances connected with the case.
