CBSE excludes interdisciplinary subjects for current Class IX batch, retains compulsory vocational study

Panchkula, Oct 29 (UNI) CBSE has excluded “Individuals in Society” and CT and AI modules from the curriculum for students currently in Class IX, and “Environmental Education” from their Class X curriculum in 2027-28, while retaining compulsory vocational education.
The directions, issued through Circular Acad-70/2026 on Thursday, apply to the Class IX batch of 2026-27 that will progress to Class X next year. Students already in Class X during 2026-27 will continue under the old scheme.
The board linked the exclusions to the implementation schedule for the interdisciplinary curricular area.
Under the standard scheme, students must study nine subjects: three languages, mathematics, science, social science, art education, physical education and well-being, and vocational education.
“Vocational Education shall continue to be a compulsory curricular area,” the circular states.
Students can meet this requirement by choosing either Kaushal Vikas or one of 22 notified skill subjects. The choice will determine their assessment route in Class X and whether the vocational subject can replace a failed core subject.
Kaushal Vikas will have school-based internal assessment, with no board examination. Students choosing any of the 22 skill subjects must take a board examination in that subject in Class X during 2027-28.
The distinction also affects result calculation. A student who passes the chosen skill subject but scores below 33 per cent in any one of mathematics, science or social science can have that subject replaced by the skill subject when the Class X result is computed.
This replacement provision is not available to students choosing Kaushal Vikas.
The five core board-exam subjects remain two languages, mathematics, science and social science. The passing threshold is 33 per cent in each, calculated by combining internal assessment and board examination marks, subject to the specified replacement provisions.
The third language, art education and physical education and well-being will have school-based internal assessment. Additional board papers will depend on students’ optional subject choices and vocational route.
Artificial Intelligence remains one of the 22 skill subjects, alongside Information Technology, Data Science, Agriculture, Health Care, and others. Its availability as a skill subject is distinct from the exclusion of the specified CT and AI modules.
The circular also provides separate arrangements for children with special needs, including one compulsory language with a board examination and a choice of four other board subjects from the prescribed list.
Schools have been asked to circulate the scheme and accompanying assessment details among students and other stakeholders.UNI KK AAB
