Centre awaits state nod for Bengaluru metro Phase-2, 3A

Bengaluru, May 23 (UNI) The Union government will take up the revised cost estimate of Bengaluru Metro Phase-2 and consider the Phase-3A proposal once the Karnataka cabinet grants its approval, Union Minister for Housing and Urban Affairs and Power Manohar Lal said here on Friday.
The Minister was speaking during a review meeting on the progress of various urban development missions in Bengaluru. The meeting was attended by Karnataka Urban Development Minister Byrathi Suresh, Municipal Administration Minister Rahim Khan, Housing Minister B Z Zameer Ahmad Khan, Energy Minister K J George, Additional Chief Secretary Tushar Giri, and senior officials from the state government and the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs.
Manohar Lal expressed satisfaction over the city’s infrastructure initiatives and reiterated the Centre’s support for Bengaluru’s urban transformation. Currently, around 75 km of metro network is operational in the city, while 145 km is under construction.
An additional 45 km stretch under Phase-3 has already been sanctioned by the Centre at a cost of Rs 15,600 crore.
The Karnataka government has now proposed Phase-3A, which would add another 37 km of metro lines at an estimated cost of Rs 28,400 crore. The proposal, the Minister said, is under expert review, and the Centre will consider it for final approval upon receipt of a detailed response from the state.
Manohar Lal also urged the State to prioritise the scientific remediation of legacy waste and stressed the importance of reusing treated wastewater to enhance urban water sustainability. He called for higher Floor Area Ratio (FAR) allowances along mass transit corridors to promote denser, transit-oriented development and reduce traffic congestion.
In response to Karnataka’s request for additional funds, the Minister encouraged the state to implement urban reforms to become eligible for interest-free loans under the Centre’s ‘Scheme for Special Assistance to States for Capital Investment (SSASCI) 2025-26’.
