Centre reconstitutes CBFC with 18-member board for three-year term

New Delhi, Sep 16 (UNI) The Centre has reconstituted the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) with 18 members, giving the statutory film-certification body a new composition for a period of three years or until further orders, whichever is earlier.
The reconstitution was notified by the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting on September 16 under the provisions of the Cinematograph Act, 1952, and the Cinematograph (Certification) Rules, 2024. The new Board has come into effect immediately.
According to the government notification, the Central Government has exercised its powers under sub-section (1) of Section 3 of the Cinematograph Act, 1952, read with Rule 3 of the Cinematograph (Certification) Rules, 2024, to constitute the new Board.
The 18-member CBFC includes personalities drawn from cinema, television, music, literature, theatre, public life and other creative fields. The newly constituted Board comprises film critic Vinod Anupam, actors Manoj Joshi, Suniel Shetty, Roopali Ganguly, Preity Zinta, Pankaj Tripathi, Prosenjit Chatterjee, Pallavi Joshi and Nishigandha Wad; filmmakers Abhishek Jain, Priyadarshan and Neela Madhab Panda; music composer Ricky Kej; singer and former parliamentarian Hansraj Hans; producer Supriya Yarlagadda; poet and writer Yatindra Mishra; theatre personality Waman Kendre; and writer Ramesh Patange.
The reconstitution comes as the CBFC continues to perform its statutory responsibility of examining films and granting certification for their public exhibition. The Board functions under the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting within the framework of the Cinematograph Act and the rules governing film certification.
The government notification does not specify any individual terms of reference for the newly constituted Board or announce changes to the existing certification framework. The members will therefore discharge their responsibilities under the prevailing statutory provisions and certification rules.
The diverse composition of the Board brings together experience from mainstream and regional cinema, independent and documentary filmmaking, television, music, theatre and literature. The government notification formally puts the new 18-member body in place with immediate effect.
The latest reconstitution also comes against the backdrop of changes to the legal framework governing film certification following the Cinematograph (Amendment) Act, 2023 and the Cinematograph (Certification) Rules, 2024. The certification process remains the statutory mechanism through which films are examined and certified for public exhibition under prescribed categories.
The new CBFC composition will remain in force for three years or until further orders, whichever is earlier. UNI SKA AAB
